Have you ever gone skydiving? Krista gave me a jump for my birthday early on in our marriage. It was something I always wanted to do.
As I was putting on my suit, I began to get nervous, yet was looking forward to the excitement I knew would come. When the plane started going up in the air, the anticipation grew. Then one of the crew members opened the door of the plane and things got real.
As I saw the land get smaller and smaller, my mind went numb and my body switched into auto-pilot mode. My trainer had me sit in front of him while he fastened me to himself. We then waddled to the edge of the opening and without thinking, I jumped.
I tell you, that was the most exhilarating experience of my life. At some point the guy on my back pulled the cord and our chute opened and eventually we landed. Now, I can say I jumped out of a plane, but I am no skydiver. All I did was jump, and the experienced diver did all the rest. I didn’t even pull the cord!
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is like this. We need to let go of the control of our lives. We so often want to manipulate everything, even outcomes we have no way of determining. God wants full control over you and me. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” In other words, stop trying to do everything yourself, and trust Him to be in charge.
You and I have been bought with a price. We don’t own our lives anymore if we’ve given them to Christ. How incredibly freeing is that? We just need to jump. Let God pull the cord and get us safely where He wants us to go. Are you willing to jump? Are you willing to step out in faith and let God be in control? What is it that you need to give over to Him today and say, “I trust you with this, Heavenly Father.”
